A quick look before you choose
Start with the work in front of you: a varied drafting task, a maintained document project, a bounded source collection or text that mainly needs revising. These are different reasons to choose a tool.

You need a measured accuracy, speed or price ranking. These are documented-feature and workflow assessments.
The phrase “AI writing tool” covers several jobs. You may need a first draft from notes, a conversation around reference documents, answers grounded in a reading collection or a better version of a sentence you already wrote. Comparing those jobs is more useful than choosing a universal winner.
Begin with the document you want to finish
Use one fictional project update as your starting point. Include two confirmed dates, an unresolved question and a short terminology list. Decide whether you want a customer email, a source-supported explanation or a sentence edit. Keep that deliverable fixed while you compare the relevant candidates. A tool should not win because it answered a different, easier question.
ChatGPT: a flexible drafting conversation
ChatGPT is the candidate to inspect when the work may move between a brief, an outline and a revised draft. Keep an approved fact list outside the conversation. In your trial, ask for one targeted revision and check whether the dates and unknowns survive. The important question is whether the workflow reduces drafting effort without increasing the checking burden.
Claude: recurring work around references
Claude is worth considering when several conversations rely on a maintained collection of files and instructions. The organisational benefit depends on keeping that collection current. Try replacing one outdated source and inspect the next draft for stale wording. A project with good reference hygiene is a different proposition from a folder where every past note remains equally authoritative.
Gemini Notebook: reading before writing
Gemini Notebook belongs on the shortlist when the central job is asking questions of selected material and returning to the supporting passages. Prepare a question that requires two sources and one that none of the sources can answer. Inspect the citations and the unknown-answer behaviour. An attractive summary should make the reading easier, not become a substitute for checking the evidence.
Wordtune: improve an existing passage
Wordtune fits a narrower editing trial. Start with text whose facts are already approved, then compare a shorter or differently toned version. Mark every condition and qualification before rewriting. If the revision drops an eligibility rule or turns an estimate into a promise, reject it even if the sentence reads more smoothly.
Compare the review effort
Record which corrections were required, how easy they were to locate and whether the final output entered your working document without extra cleanup. Do not score a long answer more highly simply because it contains more material. A concise, accurate revision can be a better result than a polished essay that introduces unsupported claims.
Choose the smallest useful commitment
Check the current plan, usage limits, data controls and export needs for the workflow you tested. You may already have access to an adequate tool. Begin with one repeated job and keep its source and review checklist. Expand only when the accepted results justify it. This is a comparison of documented features and proposed workflows, not a measured ranking of model intelligence.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| A good fit for | A working draft from a supplied brief. | Document work with recurring reference material. | Questions anchored to a selected source collection. | Revising text you already own. |
| Documented capabilities | ChatGPT supports drafting, rewriting, file-based work and web search. Available tools and usage allowances depend on the account and plan. | Claude supports writing and document work. Projects can hold reference files and instructions for related conversations. | Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, organises source material for questions and generated study or research artifacts. Selected notes can act as sources and receive passage-level citations in chat. | Wordtune offers rewriting, shortening, expansion and tone choices. Its web editor also supports summaries and stores work in Pages and Summaries. |
| A useful acceptance check | Both dates survive, the unknown budget stays unknown, and the unresolved question does not turn into a promise. | The response separates the two versions, preserves the exception and points to material you can inspect. | The answer identifies the relevant report, links to the supporting passage and acknowledges the disagreement. | The condition and uncertainty remain visible, and the revised sentence still sounds appropriate for its reader. |
| The trade-off | A fluent answer can still introduce a fact that was absent from your source. Connected tools also change what information the assistant can access. | Adding material to a project is not the same as proving every response used the right passage. Outdated reference files can compete with current ones. | A citation makes a claim easier to check; it does not remove the need to read the passage. Imported notes may contain your interpretation as well as source facts. | A shorter or smoother sentence can drop a condition, soften a warning or strengthen a promise. Accept changes sentence by sentence. |
